HRCSL creates a Child Rights Protection Unit

The Human Rights Commission Sri Lanka opened a Child Rights Protection Unit
The Human Rights Commission Sri Lanka (HRCSL) launched its Child Rights Protection Unit
on the 1 st October 2022 in commemorate the World Children’s Day. The Unit headed by
Dr. Vijitha Nanayakkara, Commissioner of the HRCSL., Justice Rohini Marasinghe,
Chairperson of the HRCSL In her speech during the event stressed on the importance of strong
mechanisms being in place to protect the rights of the child. She also thanked the UNICEF for
facilitating the establishment of this Unit within the HRCSL.
Ms. Miranda Armstrong, Chief of Child Protection UNICEF in her speech during the event
stated opening this Unit is a great opportunity to look at the Convention on the Rights of the
Child and reprioritize those rights here in Sri Lanka. She also stated that UNICEF looks forward
to continuing the good collaboration with the HRCSL.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka is dedicated towards protecting the rights of
children through successful operation of the newly opened Child Rights Protection Unit.
