International Women’s Day 2026 Commemorated by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka – Vavuniya Regional Office

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) – Vavuniya Regional Office conducted an awareness programme to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026 on 10th March 2026 at Neithal Conference Hall, Mannar District Secretariat, Mannar . The programme was organized under the theme “Women, Climate Change, and Disaster: A Rights-Based Response with Lessons from Cyclone Ditwah.”

The programme aimed to enhance awareness of the disproportionate impact of climate change and disasters on women and girls, while promoting a rights-based approach to disaster risk reduction and management. It also sought to encourage the active participation of women in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery processes, recognizing their critical role in building resilient communities.

Participants were provided with an overview of climate change and its growing impact on livelihoods, food security, health, and community well-being. Discussions focused on the challenges faced by women during and after disasters, including increased vulnerability, barriers to accessing services, and the importance of ensuring that disaster response mechanisms are gender-sensitive and inclusive.

The programme further highlighted the need for sustainable development practices and community-based initiatives to mitigate climate-related risks. Participants were encouraged to strengthen their preparedness for future disasters and to engage actively in local decision-making processes related to climate adaptation and disaster management.

The awareness session also emphasized the protection and promotion of women’s rights in disaster situations, drawing attention to the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of Sri Lanka and the State’s responsibility to ensure equality, dignity, and protection for all persons during emergencies.

Through this programme, the HRCSL reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, while empowering women to play a meaningful role in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and disasters.
