JEDB Undertakes to Pay All Arrears of EPF/ ETF/ Gratuity

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka received a complaint regarding the nonpayment of EPF/ ETF/ Gratuity of approximately 12000 estate workers of estates owned by the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB), Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation, and Elkaduwa Plantations Limited in 2013. The total due payment was around Rs. 1888 Million. The Ministry of Plantation Industries, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Enterprise and Kandy Development, Department of Labour, and Central Bank of Sri Lanka also were the respondent parties to this case.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka issued the recommendations to all respondent parties regarding the nonpayment of EPF/ ETF/ Gratuity in 2019, but the respondent parties failed to implement the recommendations.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka summoned all parties to the Commission on 23rd March 2022 and inquired about the progress of the recommendations. The Janatha Estate Development Board had undertaken to settle all due payments of former estate workers of the Estates of JEDB on or before the 2nd November 2022.
