Human Rights Commission of Sri Lankan calls for the immediate release of detainees and remandees

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lankan (HRCSL) has communicated to the Attorney General its concerns to take necessary measures to ensure the protection of the rights of detainees and remandees.

In a statement the HRCSL said it expressed grave concern about the rehabilitation process to which detainees and remandees will reportedly be subjected as well as the rights of the cletainees and remandees under The Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Ernergencv Regulations. The Commission has called for the immediate release of those held in detention or remand for a long period of time without charges and against whom there is no credible evidence. The Commission has further called upon the Attorney General to review the cases of the indicted and to withdraw those cases which are solely based on confessions made to police officers, cases where there is no credible evidence exist and for cases which are relativelv minor.
